process of belief: a single instance of a system of belief affecting the course of action taken; refers to a moment of decision-making, as specific input from the surrounding world is passed through the filters of accumulated knowledge and memory, resulting in an “instinctual”, first-impulse action to take

system of belief: a related group of assumptions about the cause-and-effect nature of the world around one, accumulated over time

act of faith: taking an action that is not entirely based upon—and may even directly contradict—one’s system of belief

The Messy Divorce of Faith and Belief is a collection of some of my short stories, published in 2006.  It contains the award-winning story “The Maid”, chosen by Stephen King as one of the winners of the On Writing contest.
